I was raised in Floyd County, Virginia, surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.  I have had a passion to create all of my life.  My surroundings provided the perfect outlet for this need.  I paint subjects that touch on my experiences and memories.  I draw heavily from the familiar surroundings of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  In each painting, I want the viewer to enter the serenity of the environment.

I enjoy working with multiple mediums and any subject matter that whispers to me.  Being diverse in my creative process prevents me from becoming stagnant, allowing me to continue to grow as an artist.  When looking at my work, I know that through the years I have developed a style that reflects my life, my values, and my passions.  My inspiration comes from observing the small vignettes of everyday life.  These stories are nostalgic reminders of where we come from and hints of where we're going.

I taught art for the students of Floyd County for 35 years.  I continue to teach one class each year. I think it is important for those who teach art to also be artists (if not why should kids believe anything you tell them).

I dabble in lots of materials but consider drawing the root of all of my endeavors—as an artist, if I am not drawing with an implement, then I am drawing with my eyes—and as subject matter goes—there is nothing more lovely or challenging to interpret than the human form—to capture the body language that says, “I am human”.

Retiring to Floyd, Virginia definitely changed my life. I took classes in painting and was inspired to return to art full-time. There is a wealth of inspirational scenery in the region but even more impressive is the large group of wonderful artists to work with, who really embrace your desire to create and extend helpful support.

My choices for the art that I submitted for the Floyd Artist Suite reflect the many aspects of creative activity here in Floyd.

I am a lover of beautiful things and beautiful people, as is many an artist.  I have a knack for portraiture, capturing the essence of a person’s spirit.  I also am a nature lover and I think there is special magic in capturing the two together.  The landscape particularly speaks to me.

I’m a versatile artist, capable of rendering photographs, drawing caricatures, sculpting, collage and working in a variety of drawing and painting media, with a focus on pastels, acrylic and colored pencil.

I have done many commissions, from advertising to pet portraits, sign painting, to mural painting.

Kate Courtney Anderson is an award winning print maker and oil painter.  A long time resident of Floyd (since 1978) Anderson has always been drawn to the landscape.  “Inspiration comes to me from the complexity of the environment.  As such, I am a realist painter in that the images I paint are recognizable while trying to create a seductive reality layered with subtle meaning.”  Recently Anderson opened her own Gallery studio where you can come and watch the artist creating her original prints.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Floyd County, Coffin’s work depicts the stunning vistas that are found throughout Southwest Virginia.  “I am drawn to Floyd – the rolling hills, valleys, waterways and people; the peaceful sunsets, the vibrant colors of both season and person.  I try to reflect that in my work.” said Coffin.

Coffin attended the Chicago Institute of Art and has been drawing and painting since she was a child.  Coffin comments, “I am fortunate to make Floyd County my home.  Here, both artisans and the public in general support the local arts, creating a healthy community.”

My parents were both artists and we had a home full of creative energy.  Art has always been part of my life.

I enjoy painting reflections of my surroundings.  Growing up in Florida I painted tropical flowing watercolors while attending classes at Fort Lauderdale Art Institute and taking classes from artists I admired.  While living in New Hampshire newly married and having babies I painted the winter scenes with rustic old buildings.  In Floyd I enjoy oil painting along the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, and capturing the essence of musicians that play music in the Country Store.

In my studio I teach art to aspiring artists of all ages exploring the the various media while learning basic concepts of art.  My approach to teaching art combines the joys of creating with the joys of learning, while encouraging students to discover their own creative style.

Art has always been an integral part of Rick Cooley’s life, from an early age he was encouraged by family and friends to continue his drawings of life around family‘s farmhouse in rural Indiana.  He sold his first painting to a family friend at 9 years old.  Later he studied art at Indiana University and Herron School of Art in Indianapolis.  While at Herron, he began working for the Saturday Evening Post, which led to other art directing positions at Indiana University School of Medicine and Child Life Magazine.  Soon he began to wish he were selling illustrations rather than buying them.  This led to him doing illustrations more and more until he and his family moved to Virginia, where he would become a full-time illustrator. During his twenty- odd years as an illustrator, he has designed for clients internationally and has won numerous national awards.

More recently Rick has fulfilled his dream of doing more self-motivated work.  Along with a thriving commercial design business, he has entered the gallery field where he can produce work that has a deeper meaning to him both personally and aesthetically.
